Let’s bust some myths—one step at a time!
When it comes to your feet, there’s a lot of bad advice floating around. And because your feet are literally your foundation, believing the wrong thing can lead to discomfort, injuries, or even long-term foot problems.
At Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Specialists, we’ve heard it all—from bunion cures involving potatoes (yes, really!) to the idea that pregnancy means your shoe size must go up forever.
So today, we’re setting the record straight with Dr. Bryan Raymond, our Fellowship-Trained Foot & Ankle Surgeon who knows what your feet really need to stay happy and healthy.
🚫 MYTH #1: “Your feet grow during pregnancy, so you need bigger shoes—forever.”
✅ TRUTH: While it’s true that some pregnant women experience swelling (edema) or a temporary loosening of ligaments that can flatten the foot arch, this doesn’t mean your feet permanently grow a size. In many cases, this is reversible after pregnancy with proper foot support and rest. So before you buy a whole new shoe wardrobe, check in with a podiatrist!
🚫 MYTH #2: “If it doesn’t hurt, it’s not a problem.”
✅ TRUTH: Some foot problems like bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet develop slowly and may not hurt—yet. But early intervention is key. Catching issues before pain starts means avoiding more serious complications down the road (and maybe even surgery).
🚫 MYTH #3: “You should walk barefoot at home—it’s more natural.”
✅ TRUTH: Unless your feet are perfectly healthy and your floors are super forgiving, walking barefoot—especially on tile or hardwood—can actually lead to heel pain, arch issues, or even injury. If you must go barefoot, try cushioned house slippers or supportive sandals instead.
🚫 MYTH #4: “Only older adults need to see a foot doctor.”
✅ TRUTH: We treat people of all ages! Teen athletes, professionals on their feet all day, pregnant women, and even kids can benefit from expert foot care. Your feet carry you everywhere—why wait until they’re in pain?
👣 Take That First Step—Literally!
If you’ve ever believed one of these myths (don’t worry, we’ve all been there!), it’s time to give your feet the care they deserve. A visit to a podiatrist can help you stay ahead of the game, prevent long-term problems, and keep you on your feet—pain-free.
