As we get older, something as simple as trimming our toenails can become tricky—and if not done properly, it can even lead to painful infections. Many of the foot problems we see in patients, especially seniors and those with diabetes or circulation issues, could have been avoided with careful nail care.
Here are some practical tips I recommend:
1. Use the Right Tools
Always use clean, sharp nail clippers. Dull clippers can split or tear the nail, making infection more likely. Never use scissors or other makeshift tools.
2. Trim Straight Across
Cut your toenails straight across rather than rounding the corners. This reduces the risk of ingrown toenails, which are not only painful but can also become infected.
3. Don’t Cut Too Short
Leave a thin white edge at the tip of the nail. Cutting too close to the skin can create small openings where bacteria can enter.
4. Smooth Rough Edges
Use an emery board or file to gently smooth sharp edges. This prevents nails from snagging on socks or shoes.
5. Check Your Feet Regularly
If you notice redness, swelling, drainage, or increasing pain, don’t ignore it. What looks like a small problem can quickly turn serious, especially for those with diabetes or poor circulation.
6. Know When to Ask for Help
If you have thick nails, poor vision, neuropathy, or trouble reaching your feet, it’s safest to have your nails trimmed by a podiatrist. In our clinic, we see patients regularly for safe, professional nail care.
Bottom line: Proper toenail care is more than cosmetic—it’s preventive medicine. A few minutes of careful trimming can protect you from weeks of discomfort and potentially serious infection.
